Buffet and Band Concert

Saturday Evening saw us dancing the night away to music from The Greater Manchester Police Swing Band. We enjoyed a hot and cold buffet, with a raffle halfway through the event. A lovely evening of friendship, fellowship and entertainment. A very busy, but wonderful weekend, thanks to everyone involved.

Young Musician Competition

The Young Musician Competition took place on Saturday 19th March at North Rd., Community Primary School. The competition was very well attended with 37 contestants and many more supporters.

The extremely talented youngsters, from Year 2 in primary up to Sixth Form, played a wide range of instruments to an immensely high standard. The instruments were: piano, recorder, descant recorder, violin, guitar, classical guitar, harp, flute and trumpet. There were also several vocalists who sang across a varied spectrum of songs in a very professional manner. The fourth category was for duets, who performed a magnificent grand finale.

Well done to all who took part, it was a fabulous day. The photos are a small selection of those taken on the day.

Our thanks go to the adjudicators; Mr Clive Walkley and Mrs Sylvia Ham, the accompanist; Mr Michael Critchlow, Rotarian Bill Ham for helping, the Mayor of Carnforth, Malcolm Watkins, who presented the prizes.

Thank you to the Headmaster and governors of North Road Community Primary School for the use of the school, the Full Octave (Dalton-in-Furness) for providing the piano; Bay View Garden Centre for the flowers; E H Booth Ltd for the refreshments and the Elizabeth and Richard Wilson Trust for financial support.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped with the catering and members of Carnforth Rotary Club and friends, who stewarded the event.

Where There's Muck, There's Money!

On Tuesday 15th March in morning assembly John Blowes, of Carnforth Rotary Club, presented a cheque to Mrs Claire Weymouth, Headteacher at St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School, Halton.

The money, which came from the Santa Sleigh collection (an annual event thoroughly enjoyed by the children in Halton) is to help with the school's gardening project.

The children spend time learning how to prepare the soil, plant seeds and tend the plants as they grow. The proudly grown produce is then used for school lunches.

The Festival of Rotary 2016. District 1190

What a fabulous weekend of fun, friendship and dare I say in some cases, (with special thanks to the Ulverston club), frivolity!

The range of speakers, including dignitaries, was varied, and their topics were extremely interesting, to some being truly inspirational.

Stephen Kermode, Mayor of Sefton, revealed how he became the Mayor whilst fitting a kitchen.

Sarah Littlefield related how the Lune Rivers Trust are aiming to protect and restore the River Lune and its tributaries.

Karen Henshaw, District Inner Wheel Chairman, gave an insight into her travels around the world and her Margarette Golding Award for service to the community at home and overseas.

On Friday evening we were entertained by Ultimate Elton, an Elton John Tribute Band. There's no denying he looked and sounded the part.

John Martin, author of The Mirror Caught the Sun, spoke about Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of Nazi Reinhard Heydrich.

Rotarian George Blenkinship from Church and Oswaldtwistle presented the progress of the Water & Sanitation Project in Maikot, Nepal. It's amazing how one idea can grow to provide a water supply to a small village.

Saturday ended with the Gala Dinner and dancing to The Mike Brown Band. We were also entertained by the Ulverston Rotary members, doing the Sand Dance, each wearing their red fez.

Sunday began with a service in the Floral Hall, accompanied by the Salvation Army Band, then Professor Graham Stokes enlightened us on the spectrum of dementia.  A thought provoking speech.

Tricia Stewart, one of the original Calendar Girls, spoke about the Alternative WI Calendar which was initially a joke until touched by the serious illness of a friend; they wanted to raise money for research into blood related cancers. Their aim had been to raise £5000, but 15 years later it had raised £4 million and still continues.

A very busy, but wonderful weekend, thanks to everyone involved.

Saturday started with an interesting talk by Ed Sherry, Programme Director for the National Volunteer Police Cadet programme, which supports over 10,000 young people to become active citizens.

The second speaker was writer, broadcaster and journalist John McCarthy. In his speech John approached his incredible life and experiences with humour, courage and pragmatism. A truly inspirational, courageous person.

Dr Keron Fletcher, Addictions Psychiatrist, spoke about a young girl who had overcome tremendous obstacles in her life.

Young Chef Competition

The competition, which took place on Saturday 5th March at Kendal College, was brilliant with superb dishes prepared by the kids. Lakeland provided not only generous cash prizes but Sam Rayner, (High Sheriff) brought a selection of cookery books which were given to the candidates who did not receive cash prizes. The food firm McClures supplied every entrant with aprons and jackets. The venue was excellent – modern equipment, plenty of assistance provided by the College and experienced judges. Finally, I’m delighted to say that our own District 1190’s 13 year old Jane Rooke, from Penwortham Academy sponsored by South Ribble Rotary Club, won through and moves on to the National Final at Lincoln on Saturday 16th April.
